About:
Kehinde Wiley is a New York based artist who is known for his majestic, royal depictions of black people which resembles renaissance paintings. He creates incredibly realistic and aesthetic paintings with eye-catching backgrounds which has made his style of painting very recognisable and unique.
Kehinde Wiley had originally based his portraits on photos taken of people he found on the streets of Harlem however, his success led him to look at models which he found in urban places around the world for example, Rio de Janeiro, Senegal and Mumbai. He dressed his models in casual clothes which is based in the Western ideas of style which is also very popular in this age and made them recreate poses that were seen in historical paintings and sculptures of usually royal figures. This is what drew me to looking at his work as the contrast between that urban and renaissance styles creates a completely new and beautiful way to represent people which placed black people in a more powerful position.

Kehinde Wiley Shoot
In this shoot, I based my images on the works of Kehinde WIley. I used an African Print for the background which made the images feel bright and happy which also was inspired by the backgrounds Kehinde Wiley creates. I used quite bright lighting in the studio to create the sort of unblemished and painted effect of Kehinde Wiley and enhanced them in Photoshop using the lighting effects. I made my model wear a red tracksuit which was also quite baggy resembling the street and casual clothes that can be seen in Kehinde's art. I felt like this contrasted against the heroic-like and renaissance style poses that my model had performed which was what I aimed to achieve.
