About:
Alexander Khokhlov is a Russian photographer who creates 2D surreal portraits by painting onto people's faces with makeup and paints. He creates very perfect lines and bright colours which makes the portraits look like they've been painted onto paper or printed. Alexander's work is focused on games, optical illusions, eye tricks and word plays and uses the human face as a canvas. I think by doing this, he makes his subjects look very surreal and almost unrealistic as well as cartoon-like in some of his photos. He uses a model with soft features which contrasts against the sharp patterns he paints onto their faces and makes their features fade into the background and makes the viewer's eyes catch what's been painted on their faces first.
I think his use of people as a canvas is interesting and relates to my original intentions because he makes his subjects almost not look human rather, they look like 2D posters and objects. I think this is a very aesthetic way of expressing people however, it's more like he is expressing his thoughts onto their faces making them into canvases.
