About Keld Helmer Petersen (1920 - 2013)
Petersen was a Danish photographer who was known for his images of structures, patterns and details found in industrial areas, city scapes and nature and is regarded as the pioneer of colour photography. His career took off in 1948 with his 122 colour photographs in which he took photos of things that would only work in colour and not black and white. He achieved this by focusing on everyday things.
Helmer had created a book called "Black Noise" which features high contrast images which have been manipulated to be completely black and white as all of the mid-tones have been removed.
Personally, I think the images from Black Noise are quite interesting as it's sometimes hard to make out what the subject of the image. I also like how the images have mostly geometric shapes and structures in them and can be quite orderly which I tried to replicate.

Some images from "Black Noise".
My Response:
To create this effect in Photoshop, I clicked on Select and then on colour range so that I could select the mid-tones and delete them. I then did this with the highlights by changing them to white and then changed all the shadows in the photos to black making the images completely black and white. I then printed these images out and added them to a book similar to Helmer-Petersen's Black Noise.
