About:
"My photographs have been described as fanciful, curious, imaginative, unusual and a little creepy. They are influenced by myriad dreams and desires of what life could be."
Hugh Kretschmer is a conceptual photographer who is also an editorial and advertising photographer born in Los Angles and grew up in a family of artists.
Hugh's photography is very imaginative and surreal and can sometimes be quite dark. His images make the viewer question what is really happening in some of his photos whereas in others, it's easy to see what is happening. There are a lot of hidden meanings in Hugh's photos that can show the social issues we have for example, or it could show what us as humans are like.
Kretschmer's photos are varied from very bright colors with natural lines to dark images with lots of structure. His photos can also be minimalist with usually only one or two subjects in the photo with a plain background that makes you focus on the subject. He creates very playful images with the use of his colour palette which usually consist of flat, matte colours. Hugh uses Photoshop to create the surreal effect of people merging into objects or creating unrealistic scenes. He bases his works on people and ideas that he has by putting together objects that would not normally be seen together and oppose each other which makes his work stand out even more.
Personally. I like the surreal and unrealistic theme to Hugh Kretschmer's photography. I especially like how he uses conceptual photography in his advertisements as he makes them look aesthetically pleasing whilst still having another meaning that is sometimes very deep and thoughtful. Another thing that I enjoy about his photography is how childlike it seems but it is very deep and sometimes harsh. I used Hugh Kretschmer's work as inspiration because I feel as though the way he expresses ideas and thoughts are still stylistic and hard to replicate as they are so unique and detailed. His work is inspired by dreams and ideas of what a fantasy life would be like which is similar to other surreal artists as well as Ronen Goldman who bases his work on the dreams that he has.
