About David Lynch:
David Lynch is an American director, screenwriter, producer, painter, actor, painter, musician and photographer.
Eraser-head
Eraser-head is a 1977 surrealist horror film that was written, produced and directed by David Lynch and is his first feature film. In a bleak industrial setting, David Lynch creates a character that has an almost constant expression of fear and confusion on his face that has to confront his responsibilities, love, loss and death. There are many moments in this movie that are extremely confusing and disturbing which, at first glance, seem as though they lack any meaning. However, there are many interpretations to what is really happening in this film which is what David Lynch was aiming to achieve. Linking back to the ideas in the Surrealist Movement, I think this film expresses the unconscious thought that surrealist artists are trying to achieve as the events that occur in the movie aren't very logical.

About Luis Bunuel:
Luis Bunuel was a Spanish-born Mexican filmmaker.
Luis was a leading figure in Surrealism who wasn't concerned about making his films look artsy as he created harsh and shocking looking films for example, his major films such as Un Chien Andalou explored the complexity of human sexual desires.
Un Chien Andalou
This is one of Luis Bunuel's surrealist films made in 1929 which he created with Salvador Dali. Un Chien is a silent film that is only sixteen minutes long however, none of what happens in the film makes any sense which is how it was intended. There are some very disturbing and uncomfortable scenes which make the viewer want to turn away. The inspiration for this film comes from dreams that Salvador Dali and Luis Bunuel had, which is like most surreal artists. They had a conversation about the film when asked what about the inspiration for it, Dali said, "Last night I dreamed about ants swarming in my hand." And Bunuel replied, "Well, I dreamed that I sliced someone's eye open." These were the key ideas that they had for the film and then went on to create the script in six days. Their inspiration makes it seem as though this film is like looking into the minds of these artists, which there seems to be a lot of twisted ideas.

These surreal ideas could be incorporated into my portrait photography as I could express unconscious thoughts through people which contrasts against my original ideas which were to make my portraits look aesthetic. I could take portraits that are dark and unpleasant to look at but also, have deep meaning to them similar to David Lynch and Luis Bunuel's films and explore the darker and more twisted side that some people have.
